Luz then asks why the Golden Guard wanted to join the Emperor's Coven, and he reveals to her that he's a powerless witch who was taken in by the Emperor and had his entire future planned out. Luz muses that the Golden Guard had his future planned for him, but he is envious of her freedom and ability to decide her own future. During this time, Flapjack, a cardinal palisman, takes interest in the Golden Guard, but the guard is apprehensive and sees the creature as dangerous due to the fact that it is made of wild magic. The resulting crash leaves the Golden Guard unmasked, unconscious, and vulnerable, but Luz is unable to leave him to die at Kikimora's hands and subsequently slaps the guard awake. Even though he does not fully trust the human, the Golden Guard leaves his cloak as bait for the dragon while he and Luz escape to Latissa.

Hunter allegedly shattered the rear glass door at the official mayoral residence, cutting himself with glass in the process and leaving bloodstains throughout the house, the DA said. On Tuesday, LAPD Interim Chief Dominic Choi said that the break in happened during a scheduled shift change amongst members of the mayor's security detail, so no one was actually present when it took place. The shift was set to begin at 7 a.m., so security team members who had previously been on hand were heading home. Afterwards, Hunter officially bonds with his palisman, who introduces himself as Flapjack, as they leave. Hunter then reveals to them his real name and that he is the Golden Guard, as guards appear to take them, intending to take them away from their friends and families forever. In their cell, Hunter can't see why they are unhappy of being part of the best coven, they tell him they don't want to, and friends don't stab people in their backs, which he doesn't believe. When Darius takes them and their palismen, Hunter is reminded that their palismen are to be given to Belos, Hunter regrets of what he has done having realized the way he was raised is not normal.
In the episode "Echoes of the Past", King is revealed to not be the king of demons. Eda found him as a toddler on an island, being watched over by a strange amorphous creature that she managed to evade. While raising him, she unintentionally convinced him he was the King of Demons. King then sends Luz and her friends away to the Human Realm to protect them from the Collector's games.[16] As he spends time with the Collector as his chosen playmate, King comes to understand that he is misguided rather than malicious and discourages Eda and Lilith from attempting to reimprison him.

When Belos possesses the Titan's heart and infects the Boiling Isles, Luz sacrifices her life to save the Collector, who becomes remorseful while realizing the fragility and value of life. After Luz is restored to life by a repentant Titan, the Collector helps keep her friends and the Archive House safe, and is shown gratitude by Amity once Belos is defeated and destroyed. After restoring everyone under his spell, the Collector decides to return to the stars to do some "growing up", but is encouraged by King to revisit the Isles in the future. He also creates a permanent portal between the Human and Demon Realms for Luz, and returns to put on a light show for her "King-ceañera" party.
He was initially hesitant to pry into the Emperor's memories at Luz's prompting, and still thinking Belos had good intentions, refusing to listen to Luz that Belos was deceiving him, despite the increasing evidence she pointed out. Yet at the same time, Luz protected him when they encounter what they initially thought to be Inner Belos, and seeing how much Luz cares about him, Hunter begins to trust and care more about Luz. Later, when Luz tries to save him with the jacket, Hunter escapes with the glyphs in the jacket and arrives in time to save Luz from Belos, and they both escape the mindscape. At this point and beyond, Hunter stopped calling Luz "human" and instead called her by her actual name for she now earned his trust and respect. After Camila Noceda welcomes him and the others into her home, he talks privately with Luz, and they discuss how the others would react upon learning their secrets. After filling Camila in on what happened in the Demon Realm, she allows them to stay as long as they need.
He immediately storms over to one of Latissa's police precincts to contact the castle and shows his coven brand as proof. However, the guards running the precinct do not recognize their superior due to his young age, and when the Golden Guard asks for his staff in order to prove his identity, Luz hides it behind her back. Annoyed, the Golden Guard chases Luz through Latissa, and while she manages to elude him by using an ice pillar, the Golden Guard easily manages to climb up and corners her.
Sunday evening, LAPD identified the suspect as Ephraim Matthew Hunter, 29, of Los Angeles.
